The 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command conducted a Change of Stole ceremony at the Lewis Main Chapel, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Feb. 5, 2016.
593rd ESC Commander, Brig. Gen. John F. Haley removed the Stole from outgoing Command Chaplain Lt. Col. David Causey's shoulders and placed it on the shoulders of Lt. Col. Sun (Charlie) C. Lee entrusting him with the responsibilities of leadership and ministry as the new senior chaplain for the 593rd ESC.
The Passing of the Stole is not a change of command ceremony. The event signifies the transfer of spiritual leadership and pastoral from one chaplain to another. The outgoing Command Chaplain relinquishes his role as Senior Chaplain to the incoming Command Chaplain.
With the completion of his tour as the Command Chaplain of the 593d ESC, Chaplain Causey will assume duties in the ICORPS Chaplains office.
Chaplain Lee is no strangers to JBLM. In 2001 through 2004, Lee was assigned to Fort Lewis and was battalion chaplain for the 864th Combat Engineer Battalion. His most recent assignment was the Brigade Chaplain for the 42nd Military Police Brigade.
The historical basis of the Passing of the Stole Ceremony draws its tradition from the Bible. Ministers and chaplains wear the stole during worship to symbolize their voluntary submission to the will of God.
The Command Chaplain's stole symbolizes pastoral responsibility. It is a reminder of the Command Chaplain's duty to lead and facilitate the ministry of the unit ministry teams, and to perform and provide religious support to Soldiers and their families at home and deployed.
