The Western Regional Medical Command's research consultant was recently recognized for his collaborative efforts in health care during an awards ceremony in Seattle.

Col. David McCune was awarded the Innovator of the Year award in the Collaboration category by Seattle Health Innovators.

The award recognizes individuals in the community who are pushing the envelope in health innovation. The Collaboration award, specifically, was given to those who work to find creative ways to bring health innovators together with partners in the community in ways that are beneficial to both the innovators and the larger health system. Nominees were judged on the creativity of the innovation and its impact on Seattle's life sciences development. McCune and one other individual received the Collaboration award.

"I was both surprised and honored to be included with the distinguished nominees," McCune said. "I believe the award is a great recognition of the work that Madigan Army Medical Center's Department of Clinical Investigation has done to reach out and find partners in the Seattle life sciences community."

McCune, who previously served at Madigan prior to coming to the region, worked on numerous research projects to include partnering with Seattle-area health care innovators and entrepreneurs on mobile applications to amplify programs like tobacco cessation and on mobile applications to manage stress, anxiety and depression.

"This award validates the idea that there is an important role for the military health care system as a community partner in health care innovation," he said.

Also recognized alongside McCune were seven other innovators in four different categories: Collaboration, Imagination, Customer-Centered and Perseverance.

"The individuals who were honored have devoted years of their lives in pursuit of innovations that will make people healthier," McCune added. "I am very gratified that our contribution to the process of innovation was recognized, and I look forward to even more productive collaborations in 2016 and beyond."

The Innovator of the Year awards were presented by Seattle Health Innovators, a grassroots health innovation community that aims to create deeper connections within the health innovation community in Seattle and to address the need for innovations in the health care industry, including new technologies, business models and services.
