GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- The commander of the top military organization governing U.S. forces in Europe has placed a moratorium on travel to Munich and Garmisch during the G7 Summit.

U.S. European Command has issued a travel moratorium for Department of Defense personnel on non-mission essential travel to areas where demonstrations are planned in Munich on June 4 and in Garmisch June 7-8, according to a May 28 EUCOM memorandum.

The memo comes on the heels of planned demonstrations in response to a G7 Summit scheduled to take place June 7-8 at Schloss Elmau, about 12 miles south of Garmisch.

The G7 summit is an annual meeting of heads of state from seven leading industrial nations, which include the U.S., the U.K, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Germany.

Activists numbering in the thousands have called for a series of planned protests. Germany has reinstituted border controls and mobilized 15,000 police nationwide to secure this meeting, according to the memo.

At a minimum, DOD personnel in the area can expect road closures, travel delays and heightened security measures.

The memo states that DOD family members and DOD-sponsored personnel are to avoid any areas of public demonstrations during the June 4-8. Additionally, movement outside the Garmisch installation will be restricted to mission essential tasks only.
