PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (May 27, 2015) -- The Picatinny Arsenal STEM office recently participated in the 2nd Annual Department of Defense Math Games DimensionU Tournament at the Emergency Operation Center.

Students form All Saints Academy School represented Picatinny at the May 19 event. The Picatinny team competed against three Middle Schools from Illinois, New York and South Carolina. Each location represented one branch of the military, either the Air Force, Army or Navy.

Teams from each location participated in five, multiplayer rounds of mathematics-based video game play using DimensionU's gaming platform. The tournament takes place in a virtual, first-person action video game world, where students compete and interact as teams solving mathematics problems as part of their objective to win.

The tournament was augmented with live video transmission across the four states, allowing students to see their opponents. First place team members from each of the grade level competitions were awarded $100 gift cards as their prize. Trophies were also awarded to each school with a first place team and each military research laboratory.

"In an effort to get students comfortable with STEM education and math in particular we have utilized the Dimension U Mathematics game with great success in the local community," said Shahram Dabiri ARDEC STEM Manager.

"We not only support events such as Math Games Tournament but we also train local educators in its utilization. The only complaint any teacher has received from a parent regarding DimensionU was that their kids were spending too much time on math. And we the STEM office are so thankful for everyone at the Emergency Operations Centers participation and contributions towards making this event possible and a huge success. The kids had a blast!"

For the 6th Grade competition, Staley Upper Elementary School (Air Force-NY) took first place, Urbana Middle School (Army-IL) took second and All Saints Academy (Army-NJ) placed third.

For the 7th Grade competition, Dubose Middle School (Navy-SC) placed first, Urbana Middle School (Army-IL) placed second and All Saints Academy (Army-NJ) placed third.

For the 8th Grade competition, Hanahan Middle School (Navy-SC) took first and All Saints Academy (Army-NJ) placed second.

In the Mixed Grade competition, Dubose Middle School (Navy-SC) 7th Grade placed first, Staley Upper Elementary School (Air Force-NY) 6th Grade took second and All Saints Academy (Army-NJ) Algebra Team took third.
