Name:

Glenn Williams

Organization where you work:

G-4 Environmental Division

Years of service at AMCOM:

10 years

Before working at AMCOM, where did you work?

NAVAIR

What is your job?

My branch is responsible for identifying and mitigating sustainability risk that results from environmental regulations. We find environmentally compliant materials/processes, work with engineering to qualify them, and then work with the Depots and PMs to implement them into our maintenance activities.

What do you like most about your job?

A lot of research and development is done through scientific collaboration. I really enjoy meeting engineers throughout DoD and industry and having the chance to work with them to solve common problems.

Did you serve in the military? If yes, for how long and what did you do?

No. I had intended to, but asthma kept me out.

What are you usually doing when you're not at work?

Chasing my three kids to their extracurricular activities. Two are swimmers, the boys are into scouting, and the younger boy is involved with a leadership program at school.

If you could speak directly to the Soldier you support, what would you say?

First of all, thank you for doing what you do so that I can enjoy the freedoms we have in this country. Then I would ask the soldier what is the biggest impediment to their job that results from environmental regulations and what can I do to help fix it? Each time I've asked that question in the past, I got an answer that I was not expecting.

What would people be most surprised to learn about you?

I once participated in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for a conga line. We ended up with 12,700 people, but there were a couple of large breaks in the line so the Guinness folks didn't accept it. It wouldn't have lasted long anyway. Two months later the record was set at just under 120,000 in Miami.

Who are your heroes or who has inspired you? Why?

Hmm, I could take the easy way out here and list Jesus or my Dad, for the obvious reasons. They are my heroes and they do inspire me, but I actually have a couple of unique ones I can share. Chuck Yeager - I read his autobiography in high school, and was impressed with his courage, determination and calmness under fire. Ken Hood - my first scoutmaster. He had a unique leadership style and helped steer me through some of my awkward adolescent years by helping me find a place where I could lead and inspire others. I model my work today as an Assistant Scoutmaster after his style. Coach Steve Spellman - my World History teacher in high school. He had a way of making a genuine connection with people, especially his students and players, and was an excellent teacher, as well.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A pilot.

Complete this sentence: What AMCOM means to me:

I've always been disappointed that I was unable to serve in the active duty military. However, the opportunity to work for AMCOM, and NAVAIR before that, means I am still able to give back to my country by being there and supporting those who do serve. AMCOM means I have a chance to make a small difference as we strive to make the Army more sustainable into the future.
