ANSBACH, Germany (Dec. 31, 2014) -- In both Germany and the U.S., New Year's Eve celebrations are often characterized by lively social gatherings where friends and family members eat, drink, dance and watch fireworks as the clock strikes midnight.
This is usually a joyous time when people reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and make a commitment to a more prosperous year ahead.
If you're not careful, though, that enjoyable evening can quickly turn sour and spoil the start of your New Year. The good news is that you can prevent such a turn of events by using common sense and putting into practice a range of simple safety measures.
Having a good time and being safe are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the opposite is true: Exercising precautions will ensure you recall those celebrations with lasting, fond memories instead of with regrets over a mistake that involves alcohol -- such as drinking and driving.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, but it bears repeating: Social events should be about the company you share, not the liquid you drink. If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly. Have a plan before you start. If you're hosting a New Year's party, set the example by acting responsibly and ensure everyone gets home safely. Have the number of a taxi on hand. No one who has been drinking should get behind the wheel! Just remember that a designated driver helps you party another day.
If you're looking for fireworks, visit a city's New Year's event where professionals handle the risk. Be careful of irresponsible behavior and stray fireworks. Remember, fireworks on post are prohibited.
Leaders and first-line supervisors can make a difference during holidays, and New Year's Eve is a prime example. When you practice and teach others safety and risk mitigation, you save lives. As a leader, you must be engaged. Ensure you and your teammates incorporate risk management into your plans.
Don't forget: If you haven't noticed, it's snowy and icy outside. This presents an added layer of risk if you plan to be out and about. If you are driving -- and of course not drinking -- check road conditions before you depart, slow down as needed for the conditions and always make sure you and your passengers are buckled up.
Team Ansbach, the command is proud of all you do and all you have accomplished in 2014. Your talent and hard work are just part of why we are able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the shared purposed of making this the Best Hometown in Europe. Let's uphold this effort into 2015 by continuing to make this a healthy, fun, welcoming and safe place in which to live, work and play.
Happy New Year's!
