USAG Bavaria Teammates,

As we draw closer to the end of 2014, I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication over the past year as a member of USAG Bavaria. I truly appreciate all that you have accomplished this year, and I want you to enjoy some well-earned downtime during this holiday season.

Many of you plan to celebrate with family and friends. While preparing for these holiday get-togethers, remember to make safe decisions.

As you get ready to travel this holiday season, I ask each of you to use the TRiPS online assessment tool, located at https://safety.army.mil/TRIPS.

And whether you are traveling to other locations or staying in the local area, please be aware of hazards that are associated with this time of year, especially icy roads. A major concern for our folks and their families should be motor vehicle accidents, which remain the top cause of holiday fatalities and the number one killer of our off-duty Soldiers. Many accidents result from fatigue, excessive speed and drinking. Be sure to plan accordingly and allow ample time to reach your destination. When driving, be alert, be prudent and always anticipate the unexpected.

Holidays also mean getting together with family and friends to celebrate, which may include alcohol. If hosting a party, be responsible and attentive to the alcohol consumption of your guests. Ensure designated drivers are available or provide other arrangements. If you choose to drink, remember that passing the keys to a friend is the most important decision you will make.

During this holiday season, the "See Something - Do Something" safety motto of our community applies to all.

If you see someone who appears to be lost, lonely or depressed, please take action by getting personally involved. All leaders and Soldiers must be aware of the indicators and risk factors that contribute to suicide. Leader, supervisor, friend and family engagement are essential. This time of year can be lonely, especially if away from family. Reach out to those who are alone and take them under your wing for the holidays.

Lastly, review force protection measures and maintain situational awareness throughout the holiday season and report suspicious activity to military police, local law enforcement or http://www.eur.army.mil/eureport/default.asp. Be aware of your surroundings and identify potential threats and dangerous situations. Visit http://travel.state.gov/ for the most up-to-date information on overseas security conditions.

So, please stay safe and celebrate responsibly. I wish you all the best during this holiday season, a time of great joy and celebration. I look forward to seeing all of you safely return from the holidays and know we will continue to accomplish great things together in the New Year. Thank you for all you do each day for USAG Bavaria!
