INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A computer equipment donation from the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) and the their partner the Kansas City Recruiting Battalion is helping Lawson High School launch a new media center that will enhance the learning experience for students during the upcoming school year.

With its contractor, Alliant Techsystems (ATK), LCAAP was able to donate excess, serviceable information technology equipment, including 15 laptops, two desktop computers, 93 monitors and three printers, to the school in Lawson, a suburb just north of Kansas City, Mo. ATK is the contractor that runs the small caliber ammunition production facility at LCAAP.

The donation was the joint effort of Steve Eckert, LCAAP information assurance manager, Scott Hayes, LCAAP property manager, and Staff Sgt. Brandon Lovingier from Northland Army Career Center in Kansas City, Mo., who recruits Lawson High School for the U.S. Army.

The equipment will help Lawson High School establish a new media center that will be mobile and used in various buildings, said Roger Schmitz, superintendent, Lawson R-XIV School District, who accepted the equipment for the school.

"We have to farm out current computers to the point where some systems are out of date," Schmitz said when he received the equipment.

Eckert said the school needs another 15 laptops and that Team Lake City will look to help them in the future when other serviceable, excess equipment becomes available. He is also willing to accept donations from other Joint Munitions Command organizations who want to help.

"We're pleased to partner with Northland Army Career Center to make this donation to Lawson High School," said then LCAAP Commander, Lt. Col. Larry Cannon, who presented a symbolic laptop to Schmitz. "It's a win-win situation for the students who will benefit from it, Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and local taxpayers."

LCAAP is a subordinate command of McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma. It is the Defense Department's premier small caliber ammunition production facility. LCAAP is one of 14 installations in the Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, and one of 21 organic industrial bases under the U.S. Army Materiel Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
