FORT STEWART, GA -- Cool autumn temperatures and sunshine set the backdrop for many children in the Hunter Army Airfield and surrounding communities Saturday morning as they prepared for the bi-annual Kids Fishing Derby held at Hunter's Halstrom Lake.

The lake was stocked for the day's event with 2,000 pounds of catfish, said the Directorate of Public Works fisheries biologist Rachael Hallman, . More than 100 children, alongside their parents and grandparents, were able to take home the catch of the day and bragging rights. Family Member, 5-year-old Zoe Ward, planned what she would catch each time her hook hit the water.

"I am going to have two girls and one boy fish," Ward said. "If I catch another one, it's going to be a boy."

Children up to the age of 16 were allowed to catch and keep a maximum of five fish. Prizes, such as fishing poles, tackle boxes, and flashlights were given away during a drawing. Hallman said the fishing derby was a great way for Families to spend time together.

"It's a great way to get children and the Soldiers out here," Hallman said. "Fishing gives them a chance to have recreation and get them fishing."

Once caught, the fish are then cleaned, filleted and bagged by DPW's Fish and Wildlife branch.

"Even if you don't like the catfish," said Janet Pickett, a recreation assistant, at Outdoor Recreation. "Just catch and release them."
