541st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Soldiers convoyed into their community partner Wabaunsee County to display military vehicles, equipment, meatloaf and pie, at the 6th annual Meatloaf Cook-Off & Festival June 28 at Paxico, Kan.
"I knew the unit was participating in the Meatloaf Festival and car show," said Cpt. Richard Klimkowski, 1st Sust. Bde. assistant operations officer. "We came out to see what Wabaunsee County was all about."
Staff Sgt. James Stanphil, HHC 541st CSSB, entered a meatloaf while Sgt. Troy Mansfield, 24th Transportation Company, entered a pie into the festival competition. They did not seem surprised by the contest results after the judging took place more than six hours after their masterpieces came out of the oven.
"I've never been in a unit that participated with the community as much as this one," said Klimkowski. "I think it's fantastic."
"Pacesetters" displays included a Mobile Kitchen Trailer, High Mobility Military Vehicles with M2 machine guns, Heavy Equipment Transporter, High Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks, repair and welding trailers, and a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. Soldiers were on-hand to answer festival spectators' questions, while whiteboards and posters helped to explain the equipment functions and capabilities.
"We really appreciate Fort Riley's Soldiers coming out to support our event," said Peggy Winkler, member of the Paxico Merchant's Association which organized the festival.
