The U.S. Army Materiel Command has selected the Army Field Support Battalion - Northeast Asia, 403rd Army Field Support Brigade, as the AMC 2013 winner in the Department of the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence competition, Large TDA Category.

It is the third time in four years the unit has received the honor.

"Maintaining and ensuring equipment is ready [for battle] is our business," said John Haynes, chief of AFSBn-NEA's Maintenance Division. "This is what [we do] on a daily basis."

The AFSBn-NEA was cited for maintaining more than 13,000 pieces of Army Prepositioned Stock-4 equipment at a readiness rate well above Department of the Army (DA) standard, its lessons-learned program, its effort to address systemic readiness issues in the M2/M3 Bradley fleet, and its Lean Six Sigma initiatives.

Phase I evaluation procedures for the award consist of a thorough evaluation of the battalion's maintenance management program narrative. Next is Phase II, featuring on-site assessments of the unit's readiness, maintenance management, maintenance training, leadership and innovation.

The battalion is currently awaiting results from the Phase I semifinal stage. If selected as a Phase I winner, the unit will go on to the Phase II finals.

DA-level winners are typically announced in late spring, according to Lt. Col. Gary Cregan, AFSBn-NEA commander.
