REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- A new quality of life facility opened at the Army Materiel Command headquarters Dec. 13.

"We are cutting the ribbon on another great facility -- the Sustainer Grab-and-go," said Gen. Dennis L. Via, AMC commanding general. "This is yet another addition to our workforce quality of life."

The opening comes a week after the command cut the ribbon on the Lakeside café, AMC and Army Security Assistance Command's new cafeteria. The Sustainer Grab-and-Go was unveiled during the Holiday Open House.

"What an awesome convenience for the AMC and USASAC workforce. They have all the "quick fix" needs that one could ask for," said Richard Hall, acting chief of the AMC National Maintenance Division. "From Blizzards, ice cream, smoothies and hotdogs to headache medicine, antacids and lip balm and the inclusion of the drop off dry cleaners removes one more trip out of the weekly routine."

The AMC Headquarters was built in 2011 as part of the BRAC move. Since its opening, a small fitness center, a parade field, the cafeteria, and the grab-and-go have been added to facilitate workforce morale.

"I like it because it's inside and it's convenient especially with me having a cold. I like having access to the medicine," said Darleen Gibson, USASAC employee.

J and S Foods, LLC was awarded the contract to provide the gourmet hot dogs and the convenience items in the Sustainer Grab-and-Go. J and S Foods has a long history providing the community gourmet hot dogs.

"In 2008, I opened up a Chicago style hot dog cart and now I own three of these," said Steve

Middlebrooks, owner of J and S Foods, LLC. "With good food and good prices, hard work and a little divine intervention -- here I am and I always fall back on treating people right."

Middlebrooks said that it was about more than just grabbing a crumb cake or medicinal items, it's an experience. He wants customers to feel welcome and invited.
