ARLINGTON, Va. (Oct. 20, 2013) - - Residents of Washington D.C. swept the top spots today as more than 35,000 runners participated in the U.S. Army Military District of Washington's Ten-Miler race beginning and ending next to the Pentagon under beautiful sunny skies and fall-like weather.
Overall men's winner was Solonei Silva from Washington DC followed by 2nd place winner Paulo Paula also from the district.
Women's top honor went to Kerri Gallagher followed by Elizabeth Maloy, both from Washington as well.
At the Army Ten-Miler, all participates count themselves as winners, because all of the proceeds raised by the race go to Soldier's and Soldier family Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs.
This year's top military finishers were Aron Rono in the men's division and Kelly Calway in the women's division.
"Running in this race with our Wounded Warriors is really inspiring," said Army Capt. Kelly Calway, currently stationed at Fort Carson, but also a graduate of West Potomac High School in Alexandria. "I love running in this race, it is coming home for me, and being so inspired by the Wounded Warrior racers, just makes it that much better."
Calway is scheduled to leave for Kuwait, but will then attend graduate school and join her husband as instructors at West Point, the U.S. Army Military Academy.
Produced by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, the Army Ten-Miler race attracts thousands of military and civilian runners from around the globe and is the third largest 10-mile race in the world.
The ATM event weekend also featured a two-day ATM Expo, presented by Boeing, on Oct. 18 & 19 at the DC Armory. The expo hosted more than 85 exhibitors and attracted tens of thousands of attendees. Race day activities included the "world class" race with elite athletes, live music, youth activities, and the popular "Hooah Tent Zone" which featured interactive displays and exhibits by Army installations from around the world.
