YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Members of the Yongsan-gu Korean American Friendship Council (KAFC) gathered at the Yongsan Capital Hotel to celebrate and discuss their efforts to strengthen the friendship between Republic of Korea and the United States, Sept. 13.

The council, whose members include the Mayor of Yongsan-gu, Yongsan Garrison commander, director of Yongsan Police Departments and many others, meets on every quarter to provide continuous cooperation for several events, to include the upcoming Itaewon Global Festival and USAG Yongsan Fall Friendship Festival.

"Thank you for attending in spite of your busy schedule," said Jang-hyun Sung, mayor of Yongsan-gu. "Someone says that emphasis of US-ROK alliance is military relationship, and another says it is political and economical ones. Here in Yongsan, the emphasis of our alliance is as a tightly knit community and partners of peace and prosperity."

Members of the council expressed their gratitude and respect to Charles S. Markham, U.S. Army garrison Yongsan chief Directorate of Public Works (DPW), who ends his five years of service in KAFC when he relocates to another post next month.

Sung highlighted Markham's ceaseless contribution to both the council and the ROK-US alliance and wished him luck in his continuing journey. The members then sat together and enjoyed the friendship luncheon.

"Thank you for inviting the U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan team to join you today," said Col. Michael E. Masley, garrison commander for USAG Yongsan. "We appreciate your support for our service members, families and civilians here in Yongsan. You all play an important role in keeping the Yongsan military community ready and resilient."
