BAMBERG, Germany - By the end of September, various Franconian cities, including U.S. Army garrison cities Ansbach, Schweinfurt and Bamberg, will feature free Wireless LAN hotspots. Every smartphone, tablet, and notebook user within a 150 meter radius will have 30 minutes of free access to the wireless LAN connection per day. Customers of Kabel Deutschland have unlimited access. The hotspot areas are set up in frequently trafficked areas and pedestrian zones.

The new service is part of the company's initiative to set up 300 "WLAN hotspots" in 70 cities throughout Bavaria. The hotspots are hidden under so-called "WLAN caps," mounted on top of the regular, grey telephone boxes.

"We'd like to offer people comfortable surfing experiences with high bandwidth," said Dr. Manuel Cubero, board member of Kabel Deutschland. "Our cable network provides fast internet connections and therefore is ideal for WLAN usage."

Six new hotspots are located in Bamberg's downtown area and are already online: Austrasse/Lange Strasse, Geyerswoerthplatz/Karolinenstrasse, Geyerswoerthstrasse, Lange Strasse 30, Schillerplatz 14, and Schoenleinsplatz/Willi-Lessing-Strasse.

Through the smartphone app "Hotspotfinder," users can find available public hotspots, which Kabel Deutschland and other companies provide through customers, such as restaurants, cafes and doctors' practices, resulting in a growing network of free hotspots.

A list of the free hotspots has been published by Bamberg's newspaper Fraenkischer Tag, and includes cities like Lichtenfels, Amberg, Bayreuth, Coburg, Erlangen, Fuerth, Nuernberg, Regensburg, Weiden and Wuerzburg.
