YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- The whole world watched that morning in September; the aftermath of four airliners that were hijacked by terrorists to use as weapons. Two of them struck World Trade Centre towers, one hit the Pentagon and the other was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania by the courageous passengers onboard.
Chaplains of Yongsan Garrison put together a memorial event at the south post chapel on the 12th anniversary of 9/11 to remember the people who lost their lives.
The tragedy claimed 227 airline passengers alone. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks overall, to include the 343 firefighters and 60 officers who lost their lives during the evacuation process.
Many lives were taken that day: friends, relatives and the heroes who sacrificed themselves while saving others. The memorial event was held in honor of those whose lives were cut short in the attack.
"It's the 12th anniversary for the September 11th attack, and I came out here to remember the victims of world trade centre, the pentagon, and all the rescuers," said Lisa Frailey, spouse of Deputy Garrison Chaplain Michael Frailey. "I want all the people around the world to always remember them in your prayers, and never forget."
The memorial event began with videos to remind people about the casualties of the attack. The chaplains of Yongsan Garrison gave remarks to remember heroic sacrifices and premature deaths of innocent lives.
"Though the attack occurred, the terrorists failed to achieve their goals," said Timothy Won, USAG Yongsan Family Life Chaplain. "Instead of division, there was unity. Instead of confusion, there was clarity. Instead of falling apart, we came together. So today, after having come together let us remember together."
The memorial event was meant to demonstrate that there are heroes and the world will never forget the tragedy of 9/11 and the sacrifices of those who gave their lives so that others may live.
