YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- A fake website resembling the official U.S. Amy Garrison Yongsan site is attempting to obtain personally identifiable information from service members, family members and civilians of the U.S. military community.
The fake website entitled 'U.S. Armed Forces Korea Command' contains links requesting visitors to 'apply for a leave here' and 'verify active U.S. military officer' status.
"The fake website requests personal information that can be dangerous and lead to identity theft and other security risks," said Col. Michael E. Masley, garrison commander for U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. "We will remain vigilant to increasingly face adversaries who attempt to exploit our military personnel and networks to obtain personal information."
The links on the fake website prompt users to input Personally Identifiable Information, including a person's full name, social security number, and date of birth via an online form.
Masley said the military community might mistakenly provide sensitive information to unknown entities because the phishing site contains the same graphics and information that is located on the official USAG Yongsan website.
"We will continue to monitor for other potential fake military sites to ensure readiness is never compromised and our military personnel and their family members are not exploited," Masley said. "U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan is committed to preventing fraudulent and deceptive practices against our military community."
There are legitimate websites that may in fact request service members to input their personal information. But service members should take all the proper measures to ensure the website is authentic and it is absolutely necessary to input personal information. Almost all official military sites will be under a .mil domain.
If members of the military community believe they are a victim of a phishing attack, they should immediately contact their chain of command to report the incident. The USAG Yongsan Public Affairs Office is available to provide further information or answer any questions related to the fake website by contacting DSN 315-738-3336/7354.
