Competitors moved through two pistol stages and one rifle stage and engaged multiple targets while standing and while taking cover. Shooters' scores were based on accuracy and speed in each stage.
"I liked that the competition was well run from the time that it started until the end. It was challenging, but simple and straightforward," said Spc. William Gilley, a rifleman with B Company, 1-24 IN, a native of Basset, Va.
Soldiers who participated in the shoot had a great opportunity to practice functional shooting skills in a safe environment. But the competitions improved more than just those.
"The best part of the event is that it allows leaders and Soldiers to interact on a less formal level. With greater participation in the future, this will improve shooting capabilities, improve firearm safety and, above all, improve cohesion between Soldiers and their leaders," said Sgt. 1st Class Larry Streeper, platoon sergeant for 1st Platoon, B Co. 1-24 IN, and Peoria, Ill. native.
At the end of the match, shooters were allowed to reshoot any stages they wanted additional practice on while scores were being compiled.
"The match is a great introduction to competition, keeping a low round count and simple stages allows new shooters on a budget to participate without worry," said 1st Lt. Chris Harpster, platoon leader for 2nd Platoon, B Co., 1-24 IN, a native of Lewistown, Pa. "Overall, it is a simple, laid-back, friendly competition in a safe environment."
So far 1-24 IN has done two competitive shoot matches at the Range Complex. This shoot was designed to be more complex than the first to provide a new challenge to the shooters and enable shooters to increase their ability.
