PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (August 7, 2013) -- Many organizations call Picatinny Arsenal home. Soon, a doctoral degree-granting program will also find a home here.

The new Armament Academy at Picatinny Arsenal is a first-of-its-kind program that will offer graduate degrees in armament engineering. Classes are planned to begin September 6 with all classes being held on Fridays at the Armament University.

"The idea behind the Armament Academy is to enhance the capabilities we have here," said Don Carlucci, senior research scientist (ST) for computational structural modeling and Armament Academy Provost.

The Academy's objective is to enhance the breadth and depth of ARDEC scientific and engineering skills by gathering, organizing, and documenting armament-specific knowledge through in-house sponsored and delivered education. Plans for the Academy include full accreditation.

Current faculty members are all ARDEC employees and subject-matter experts in their respective fields, Carlucci said. They have gone through a rigorous selection process and faculty development program to take on the additional duties to develop and teach classes.

"Eventually, the faculty will be expanded to include experts from other government organizations," Carlucci explained.

Enrollment is currently open only to ARDEC government employees, including those working outside of Picatinny Arsenal as long as they are able to physically attend classes here. In the future, enrollment is planned to be opened to other tenant organizations at Picatinny Arsenal and other Department of Defense organizations.

Applications require transcripts from previous schools, a supervisor statement and an applicant statement.

The target degree is a doctorate but master's degrees will also be offered. Students who have already earned a master's degree will be able to apply for acceptance into the program in subsequent application cycles. The program will initially offer a degree in general armament engineering. Future degree programs planned include gun systems and armament system design, scalable effects armaments, smart weapon systems, energetic and warhead design, and military operations/operations research.

ARDEC is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
