Yongsan, REPUBLIC OF KOREA -- Competing for victory in the battlefield is a timeless tradition shared by all nations. U.S. soldiers, KATUSAs and ROK soldiers continued that legacy during the first K-16 Warrior Challenge Cup, June 28.
"Glad to be here on K-16 to kick off this event, especially in front of those team leaders who are representing the units from all along the peninsula," Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel. W. Willing said. "I hope this event can continue to hold its challenges for years and I wish for all the soldiers here to enjoy today's event without being hurt."
One special element of this event was ROK soldiers were able to challenge U.S. soldiers in the competition. Three ROK army teams competed - ROK army Special Forces, ROK army Air Forces and the ROK army reserves.
ROK army Air Forces team, Master Sgt. Shin Jung Hoon said ROK army soldiers' participating in the warrior challenge cup is a way to build on the bond between them and U.S. soldiers.
"I think this event will work greatly to maintain the friendly relations we have with the U.S. army," Shin said. "Though this time, only three teams from the ROK army attended this event, I hope this warrior challenge cup grows bigger so that more ROK army teams can participate and build an even better alliance with the U.S. army."
During the competition, soldiers worked as a team to complete each set of 12 obstacles one by one. The winning team was determined by which finished the challenges faster. On average, it took approximately 20 minutes to complete the challenge. The events included sandbag running, monkey bar course and shooting at a target with a paintball gun.
After three hours, the challenge ended with three teams who scored the highest. First place was taken by the Wildcards; their time was 15 minutes and 2 seconds (15:02), followed by the Thundergods as second place (15:08) and the Desperados as third (15:13).
