FORT BENNING, Ga. (June 12, 2013) -- Bob Delaney is continuing to blow the whistle on post-traumatic stress disorder and will return to Fort Benning June 18 for the third year in a row to speak on the subject.

Delaney, a retired NBA referee and former undercover New Jersey State Trooper, will speak in four sessions to an estimated 1,200 Soldiers and Family members about how to identify warning signs of PTSD.

"I sat in on his program last year," said Capt. Steve Carrigee, G3 action officer and event coordinator. "I was very impressed with it. He's a very personable speaker. I found it helpful in regards to identifying symptoms of PTSD."

Prior to his 25-year career as a referee, Delaney spent three years undercover during an investigation into the New Jersey organized crime scene.

The stress of pretending to be another person eventually took its toll. In 2011, Delaney's book, Surviving the Shadows: A Journey of Hope into Post-Traumatic Stress, was published.

Delaney first visited Fort Benning shortly after his book was released and returned in 2012. This year, Delaney will devote an entire session speaking to military spouses, Carrigee said. Carrigee said he believed this was the first year Delaney has spoken to spouses at Fort Benning.

Spouses are usually the ones in the best position to identify early signs PTSD, Carrigee said.

Those warning signs include depression, anxiety and fits of rage, he said.

"If they have specific questions they want to ask, they can do it more comfortably," he said.

For the afternoon sessions, Carrigee said it was particularly important for officers with Soldiers under their command to be aware of PTSD.

"They're going to be company commanders," he said, "and they need to be able to identify signs of PTSD in their Soldiers."

The spouses PTSD Outreach Program session, which will also be open to members of the Warrior Transition Battalion, will be from 9-10:15 a.m. in the Fenty Classroom, McGinnis-Wickam Hall. The session for the Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course, the Noncommissioned Officers Academy, Officer Candidate School, MEDDAC and tenant units will run from 10:30-11:45 a.m. in Derby Auditorium. The session for the Maneuver Captains Career Course and Fort Benning company commanders will go from 1:15-2:30 p.m. in Derby Auditorium and the session for the Armor Basic Officer Leadership Course will be from 3:15-4:30 p.m. at Patton Hall on Harmony Church.
