WASHINGTON (April 17, 2013) -- Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment, also known as The Old Guard, spent two days learning how to operate the Combat Service Support Automated Information Systems Interface network, during training hosted by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington's J4 Logistics Directorate at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., April 8 - 9, 2013.
The Combat Service Support Automated Information Systems Interface, or CAISI, network is the largest tactical wireless network in the DOD, with over 40,000 wireless devices. It provides both wireless network extensions between locations separated by distances up to 35 miles, as well as Wireless Local Area Networks access points for local personnel.
CAISI provides network connectivity for the Logistics Information Systems, mail or web-based clients performing Combat Service Support functions. It operates primarily in a tactical deployed environment.
The purpose of the Joint Forces Headquarter National Capital Region/Military District of Washington, or JFHQ-NCR/MDW, CAISI training is to familiarize Soldiers in the NCR to react quickly during a natural disaster or state of emergency if the current network is inoperable.
"The CAISI system provides the capability to lift and shift and to be more mobile," said Lt. Col. Kenneth K. Williams, JFHQ-NCR/MDW logistics division chief. "It allows you to get vital information out in the NCR without worrying if our fixed infrastructure fails to work in an emergency. This is a combat multiplier that every organization should strive to have."
The Soldiers were taught how to secure, transport, install, connect and perform the CAISI network system. Program Executive Office Enterprise Information System instructors provided classroom exercises of each separate part of the system for familiarization of the capabilities and fundamentals.
