SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii-- The 8th Theater Sustainment Command and the U.S. Army-Hawaii Sergeant Audie Murphy Club hosted its quarterly induction ceremony inducting three members into its ranks, as well as two honorary members at the Sergeant Smith Theater on Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Apr. 2.
Since SAMC's inception in 1986, a club which recognizes exemplary performance by noncommissioned officers throughout the Army, the club has continuously added distinguished leaders to its ranks, while still honoring Sgt. Audie Murphy, the most decorated Soldier in the history of the U.S. Army.
The inductees included Staff Sgt. Chance Jackowski, a NCO with the 8th Military Police Brigade; Staff Sgt. Codye Black, a NCO with the 8th MP Bde.; and Staff Sgt. Robert Boatwright, a NCO with the 500th Military Intelligence Brigade. The honorary members included Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Woodring, senior enlisted advisor at the 8th MP Bde.; and Master Sgt. Hector Medina, a NCO with the 130th Engineer Brigade.
The guest speaker for the day's ceremony was Command Sgt. Maj. Darren McCraw, a Sgt. Audie Murphy Club member and senior enlisted advisor with the 500th MI Bde.
"This is a great day for these five NCOs, their families and the U.S. Army," he said. "They are being inducted into the pickiest of clubs, known for its professionalism, its charity and mostly for its excellence. The Sgt. Audie Murphy Club is an elite organization of NCOs, whose demonstrative performance and inherent leadership qualities reflect that of Sgt. Audie Murphy."
Sgt. 1st Class Daphne Thomas, the newly elected Sgt. Audie Murphy Club president and senior enlisted advisor for the 8th TSC's equal opportunity and SHARP programs, is excited about the direction of the Hawaii chapter of the club and is ready for it to take the next step.
"My goal is to move the club forward," she said. "We've been doing great things for the past couple years, but we don't want to keep doing the same things, we want to do more. While our main goal is to support the community, and we do a lot of volunteer work, we also train and mentor younger Soldiers."
Thomas wants to emphasize to the younger generation of Soldiers that the members of the club are there when they have questions about career progression, awards, or anything else. She also encourages anyone that is interested to come try out.
"The SAMC is great way to network and learn from each other," she added. "It isn't made up of only one MOS, it's a collection of jobs, skills, and ranks that we can take from and learn from each other."
