FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Members of the 91st Military Police Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (LI), held a ceremony Tuesday on the Division Hill parade grounds at Fort Drum to recognize the activation of the 227th Military Police Detachment "Centurions."
During the ceremony, Capt. Stephanie E. Melton, detachment commander, spoke of the ancient Roman centurions from whom the unit gets its nickname.
"Centurions were the professional officers of the Roman army, leading their soldiers from the front by their own examples of courage, discipline and honor; so must the Military Police Soldier today," Melton said.
The 227th MP Detachment was originally constituted as the 327th Military Police Escort Section in 1944. The detachment changed missions and locations over the next few decades; eventually, the designation was changed to the 227th and the unit was deactivated in Panama on March 1, 1979.
The unit is being activated on Fort Drum to allow Military Police Soldiers who previously fell under installation command to be placed under the command of 91st MP Battalion.
The new detachment is composed of MP investigators, traffic investigators, force protection and MP station desk personnel. They also provide canine support through the 8th Military Working Dog Detachment.
"There will be no effect in the law enforcement operations on Fort Drum, but this change will allow the Soldiers to receive more thorough training," said Sgt. 1st Class Christopher D. Carter, detachment first sergeant.
