WASHINGTON (Oct. 16, 2012) - - Canadian Lt. Gen. Alain Parent, the new North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) deputy commander was briefed on the mission and capabilities of the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region, the Joint Task Force - National Capital Region 2013 Inaugural plans as well as the mission and capabilities of the U.S. Army Military District of Washington during his visit at Fort Lesley J. McNair.
NORAD is the bi-national Canadian and American command that is responsible for the air defense of North America and maritime warning.
JFHQ-NCR is responsible for land-based homeland defense, defense support of civil authorities and incident management in the National Capital Region.
JTF-NCR stood up in April this year and the 57th Presidential Inaugural staff began preparations in support of the 2013 inauguration. The task force is charged with coordinating all military ceremonial support and providing civil support operations for the inaugural period.
MDW serves as the Army Forces Component to, and core staff element of, the JFHQ-NCR/JTF-NCR and provides executive, operational, ceremonial and musical support across a full spectrum of worldwide responsibilities to support our Nations' leaders.
Parent replaces Lt. Gen. Tom Lawson, who was named chief of Canada's Defense Staff last month. Parent's previous position was commander of 1 Canadian Air Division.
