Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, commander of Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the Military District of Washington, toured Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Feb. 23 and received an update on renovation and construction projects on the installation.
Instead of taking a bus requisitioned for the visit, Linnington set off on foot from command headquarters, leading an entourage of base leaders and directors from building to building, with staffers providing progress reports on each project along the way.
Starting out at Bldg. 404, JBM-HH Commander Col. Carl R. Coffman briefed the general on renovations being made inside the dining facility, which takes up one side of the building with training classrooms on the other side. The general pulled out a new wooden chair with a crossed saber design from a table inside the dining hall, and noted, "This is sharp. This is nice."
The group then walked to Bldg. 406, a former barracks building, which currently houses a base tax center and other offices. Coffman explained how the building was eventually slated for demolition because of its inefficiencies. He said it cost $230,000 a month to air condition the building last year.
From there the delegation headed to the Executive Management Housing Directorate, where Director Dee Spellman gave Linnington a tour of the facility and described how housing was allocated on base.
The tour group climbed aboard a bus for the final leg of the tour, a stopover at Bldg. 238 --where telephone switches occupy the structure's first floor with regimental career counseling on the second -- as well as a rolling loop around a utility substation being built next to Bldg. 205, which will supply the electricity needs of JBM-HH. Linnington questioned a Verizon official in Bldg. 238 about an upcoming switchover that is part of a connection upgrade for the base.
