South Post Commissary at Fort Bragg undergoes renovations

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - If you shop at the South Post Commissary, you may be wondering what the workers are doing and why there is such a big gap by where the fresh vegetables are kept. The now-empty space is going to be the new home of the deli and bakery.

This is just one of the many changes the grocery store is undergoing as part of an $8 million renovation project.

The upgrades will include new chilled and frozen food display cases; extending the building's usable space; improving the restrooms; enhancing the entrances and updating the air conditioning and heating systems. John Moore, the South Post Commissary store director, said that the project will be completed in phases over the next 14 months.

"There will be some impact to patrons as we complete the upgrades, but it will be minimal," said Moore. "Once the upgrades are complete, it will leave us with a better store that is more prepared to meet the high demands of Fort Bragg."

Some of the impact customers will notice is the current construction of the new deli and bakery which may cause some of their favorite items to be in a different section of the commissary.

"We still carry everything that we had prior to construction starting," said Moore. "If you don't see what you're looking for, just ask. We'll help you find it."

As the project prepares to enter the next phase, customers may have to enter the store through another entrance while upgrades are implemented. Moore said that signs will be in place to make the process as easy as possible on patrons.

He said much of the freezer installation will take place overnight to avoid inconveniencing customers.

In addition to the improvements the store is undergoing, Moore is also working to save customers money by implementing "Wacky Wednesdays." Every Wednesday the store will offer special sale prices on different items.
