Sharp to speak at Cultural Awareness Seminar

FORT SILL, Okla. (Aug. 30, 2011) --The Fires Center of Excellence Cultural Awareness Seminar is scheduled for Sept. 23 at Summerall auditorium at Snow Hall on post. Robert Sharp, a professor from the National Defense University's Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, is scheduled to speak about "Culture and its contribution to the utility of force."

The morning session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and the afternoon session is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. There will be limited number of seats open on a "first come-first served basis" or to reserve seats contact Daryl K. Liskey, the Field Artillery School culture and foreign language advisor.

Sharp is an authority on stability issues in Yemen, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and retired as a colonel in the British army. Sharp served in command and staff positions in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and commanded a regiment in Cyprus. In Afghanistan, Sharp was chief of staff of the U.S. Office of Military Cooperation-Afghanistan and mentor to the current minister of interior, Gen. Bismullah Khan. He joined the faculty at the National Defense University in Washington D.C. in 2007 and is a naturalized American citizen.
