FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- As summer winds down, BOSS gets Soldiers pumped up.
Fort Drum's Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers hosted its annual Beach Bash at Remington Park on Friday.
More than 1,000 Soldiers and Family Members enjoyed playing volleyball, climbing a rock wall, rolling in an adult-size hamster ball, riding a mechanical bull and listening to music provided by a DJ.
"Today was a great day for our Soldiers and their Family Members to come out and enjoy at least one more beautiful day before summer ends," said Sgt. Jacob Nickels, BOSS president. "Today was very successful, and we hope everyone had a great time.
"Our partners on Fort Drum made all of this possible, and we definitely couldn't have done it without them," he added.
BOSS also served free food and gave away several prizes to those in attendance.
Several post entities worked alongside BOSS. Fort Drum Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff members were instrumental in making the event a success.
FMWR employees helped set up, cook, serve food and clean up after the function had ended. Soldiers also took their own time to help make the day memorable.
"This is a great event," said Staff Sgt. Garry Carmack, retention NCO with 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, served as DJ and played song requests for those in attendance. "The Soldiers and Family Members are having a good time enjoying the food and the festivities, and we couldn't have asked for better weather.
"What BOSS is doing is great for Fort Drum," he added. "Today is just another way Fort Drum is working to give Soldiers other options to enjoy their summer."
Soldiers in attendance said they appreciated the time off and enjoyed the chance to get out one more day before summer is gone.
"This is really a wonderful way for Fort Drum to show their appreciation for all the Soldiers do," said Staff Sgt. Eric Braddock, 590th Quartermaster Company, 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. "The food is excellent, and everyone seems to be having a good time with all of the activities going on."
Family Members also talked how much they enjoyed the time at Remington Pond.
"Today has been a lot of fun," said Loris Pittman, wife of Spc. Deldrick Pittman, 110th Transportation Company. "All of the Families are enjoying their time, and I am glad I could come down with my husband and enjoy the day.
"I would recommend to everyone to be here for the next one," she added.
