ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- Officials from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command exclusive rights to its logo in a certificate issued Aug. 10.

"I am pleased to report that the registration for the above-referenced mark in connection with the noted goods and services has issued," wrote Trademark & Copyright Attorney Laurel E. Queeno, U.S. Army Legal Services Agency in an e-mail notifying the command of the decision.

With its mission to empower, unburden, and protect the Warfighter to enable the dominance of the Army, RDECOM has laboratories and research centers around the nation and globe.

"We knew that by providing a strong, unified brand for all RDECOM elements to follow, a stronger organizational identity would result," said RDECOM G-5 Linda Longo.

Command officials designed and implemented the unique RDECOM logo in May 2007 with the introduction of an RDECOM Brand Application Guide.

RDECOM Headquarters recognizes a clear need to create a brand image that willy identify headquarters and subordinate entities in a defined, cohesive way, according to the guide.

A trademark is a "distinctive sign or indicator used by an individual, business organization, or other legal entity to identify that the products or services to consumers with which the trademark appears originate from a unique source, and to distinguish its products or services from those of other entities," according to Wikipedia.

"It's something we felt we needed," said action officer Katie Everett. "This way the command is protected against others using the logo for their own purposes."

The process of registering an official trademark takes about six months, she said.
