WIESBADEN, Germany - Students christened the new communal Hainerberg Elementary School and Wiesbaden Middle School multipurpose room with a Mexican-themed lunch April 19.

Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe; Army and Air Force Exchange Service-Europe; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District; garrison leaders and project officials joined the students in opening the $5.8 million facility which features a large joint-use room equipped with a stage, full-service kitchen, serving area, storage rooms and entrance foyer.

"We are proud to present this building to you," said Neil Ravensbergen, resident engineer with the Corps of Engineers, Europe District, before the ribbon was cut to officially open the room.

While praising the close cooperation and teamwork of the builders, engineers, architects and construction crews, Ravensbergen said the project "was completed on time and on budget."

Dr. Robert Kandler, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden deputy to the commander, described how completion of the 14,550-square-foot facility, first conceived in 2006, helps enhance the quality of life for families in the Wiesbaden military community.

Kandler thanked all those who contributed to the effort and underscored the "close partnerships with the city of Wiesbaden" and supporting organizations which have consistently resulted in improved services and facilities for those who live and work in U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden.

"It's going to add tremendously to the quality of life here," said Dr. Nancy C. Bresell, director of DoDDS-Europe.

While students enjoyed lunch in the new facility, construction crews continued to move forward on work at Wiesbaden High School - improving classrooms, labs and common areas - efforts aimed at transforming the school to meet present and future demands.
