• Firefighters from the Fort Gillem, Forest Park, Clayton County and Morrow fire departments fight to contain a fire at the Georgia Army National Guard Readiness Center, Bldg. 608, on Fort Gillem the evening of Jan. 26. In addition to the building, which could not be saved, firefighters also had to contend with hot spots caused by windy weather conditions that spread the fire to adjacent grassy and wooded areas. These secondary fires were extinguished with little damage and there were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the blaze. The fire is now under investigation by the Directorate of Emergency Services and the DA civilian police's investigations division.    The building was to house the 221st Military Intelligence Battalion of the Army National Guard. Bldg. 608, which was an empty warehouse under renovation, was the scheduled site for a ground-breaking ceremony Jan. 27.

  • Firefighters from the Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem Fire Department observe the burning remains of the Georgia Army National Guard Readiness Center, Bldg. 608, on Fort Gillem the night of Jan. 26. The military firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the Forest Park, Clayton County and Morrow fire departments. A ground-breaking ceremony had been scheduled for Jan. 27 to mark the beginning of renovations for the building. The structure was scheduled to be part of the military enclave remaining after Fort McPherson, along with parts of Fort Gillem, are closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005. There were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the blaze and the fire is now under investigation by the Directorate of Emergency Services and the DA civilian police\'s investigations division.
