Army Center of Excellence for the Professional Military Ethic

What is it'

West Point and its Army Center of Excellence for the Professional Military Ethic (ACPME) serve as the Army's professional military ethic executive agent to increase Army-wide understanding, ownership and sustained development of the Army professional ethic through research, education and publication. ACPME broad objectives are: (1) assess, study and refine the professional military ethic of the force; (2) create and integrate professional military ethical knowledge; (3) accelerate professional military ethic development in individuals, units and Army culture and (4) support the socialization of the professional military ethic across the Army culture and profession.

What has the Army done'

In November 2007, the Army appointed West Point as the Army Center of Excellence for the Professional Military Ethic (ACPME). In March 2009, the Army further assigned West Point and the ACPME as the Army's professional military ethic and character development force modernization proponent with Army-wide doctrine, operations, training, materiel, leadership, personnel and facilities (DOTMLPF) responsibility and authority.

What does the Army have planned'

The Army plans to integrate professional military ethics and character development into leader development programs and unit training, to promote it as the dominant theme within Army professional publications and journals and the focus of discussions throughout Army schoolhouses, training and mobilizations centers. The Army will also conduct a series of competitions in 2010 to better define its professional ethic and prepare for a "Year of" the Army professional ethic in 2011. Why is this important to the Army'

Our Army character is morally strong and put to the test daily as it operates within the human terrain in an era of persistent conflict. Our leaders' and Soldiers' daily moral-ethical decisions have strategic implications. A competent Army wins battles; an Army that also has a strong professional ethic and character endures to win our nation's wars. Our professional military ethic makes us Army Strong; it is the enduring human element that unites our Army of operating, generating and future forces; with supporting families, DA civilians, retirees and contractors.
