FORT SILL, Okla. - Maj. Thomas Caldwell and family were recognized in a ceremony Wednesday as Fort Sill's Family of the Year.

Caldwell, executive officer with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery, his wife Almarie, daughters Shatondra and Ambria and son Thomas, Jr., won the award out of a field of more than 40 families.

"This year Fort Sill saw the largest total number of nominations with a total of 45 families being nominated," said Gail Coffman, coordinator, Army Volunteer Corps. "A selection committee judged each family on individual growth, teamwork, friendship and service to the Lawton and Fort Sill community."

The program began in 1983 with a national program known as the Great American Family Awards, which recognized the importance of the family in American life and the fundamental role it plays in forming and preserving the values upon which this nation is based.

"Although the national aspect of this program has disappeared, Fort Sill continues to honor the outstanding family who has made contributions to the quality of life at the installation," said Coffman.

Each nominated family receives a certificate and coupons from Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. The winning family receives gifts from sponsors. A plaque with their picture will be displayed at the PX for the next year.
