BAMBERG, Germany -- Parents and children of the U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg military community joined service support organizations on the installation April 4 to recognize the Month of the Military Child.

The kickoff for the month-long celebration began with a 5-kilometer fun run, which started at the Freedom Fitness Facility track.

USAG Bamberg Command Sgt. Maj. Bruce A. Lee presented awards to the winners of the run and thanked the parents for their participation in honoring the military child.

"The strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Family," Lee said before presenting the winners with a trophy at the JFK Multiplex. "Because of their unique courage, contributions to the Army Family and daily sacrifices, military children are everyday heroes, to the Army and the nation, as are the parents wearing the Army uniform."

After the presentation, an afternoon of activities was scheduled for the children. From driving go-karts to bouncing down a monster slide, children seemed to enjoy the day of events dedicated to them.

Child,Youth and School Services organized the event and the Bamberg Spouses and Civilians Club donated $1,000 to support the efforts in honoring the military child.

CYSS Coordinator Liwliwa Markey said the donation from BSCC helped to offset some of the costs associated with funding the event. Markey and Lee presented BSCC with a scroll of appreciation for their commitment to the military child. Also, the community bank provided two volunteers to work an activity table with the children during the event.

Lee added the Army is committed to providing military children with a quality of life commensurate with their sacrifices and said the Army is beginning to standardize and fund programs and services that support military children.
