FORT RUCKER, Ala. (May 25, 2017) -- With the onset of summer and the anticipated rise of off-duty accidents, the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center launched its annual off-duty safety awareness presentation today.
Themed "There are No Retakes in Real Life," ODSAP contains materials and statistics that highlight the role of safety in off-duty activities. It addresses risky behaviors and emphasizes the often-deadly consequences fatigue, alcohol use and indiscipline, to name a few.
"Tragically, from fiscal year 2012 through 2016, the Army lost an average of 99 Soldiers annually in off-duty mishaps," said USACRC Command Sgt. Maj. Ernest D. Bowen, Jr. "This is a trend that needs to reverse and we (USACRC) are committed to the preservation of readiness through accident prevention."
The package features embedded videos and to highlight the potential hazards associated with activities such as driving, handling weapons, recreational activities and more. The presentation is a complete briefing kit, including speaker notes, yet leaders have the option to tailor the information to reflect trends specific to their formations.
"Every Soldier plays a pivotal role in accident prevention," said Lt. Col. Phillip Jenison, chief, USACRC Ground Division. "With this presentation, our goal is for Soldiers to recognize off-duty hazards they may face, to think about the risk associated with those hazards and for them to be able to conduct adaptive individual risk management so they don't become an accident statistic."
