FORT BRAGG, N.C. --Womack Army Medical Center held its annual, week-long Nursing Skills Fair in the Health Education and Staff Development Department, Oct. 26 to 30.

The fair provided nursing and ancillary health care team members an opportunity to refresh their competency skills, acquire training on updated equipment, and learn about new products.

Over 25 skills for clinical training and development were represented; from mock code simulation, led by the Emergency Department to EKG rhythms and interpretations, led by clinical nurse specialists. Skills training was conducted and validated by WAMC department specialists and outside clinical vendors for new product introduction.

Outside clinical vendors who participated in the fair included Curos, introducing a new version of their disinfectant port protectors; Alteplase, a company that provides treatment for heart conditions and Cook Medical, highlighting the prevention of blood stream infection in central lines.

"As for hospital education and training, the nursing skills fair is great to refresh us on our skill-set while also encouraging us to work as a team," said Maj. Tanisha Currie, WAMC registered nurse. "The fair supports trainers and the nursing staff. It provides instruction and helps build the teams' clinical skills, enhancing our ability to provide the best, patient-centered care possible at WAMC."

Over 350 WAMC nursing and ancillary staff attended, updating and validating their clinical skills.

Lt. Claireisa Spencer, WAMC registered nurse for the Gastroenterology Department shared her thoughts about the fair.

"This year has been a great success. Providing the best care to patients is fulfilling for me," said Spencer. "Health promotion is very important. Instructing new nurses on proper techniques and coaching seasoned nurses on improving standards of care reduces liability overall and improves patient care experiences."
