WIESBADEN, Germany -- Retired Capt. Florent Groberg was awarded the Medal of Honor in Washington D.C., Nov. 12, for his actions during a suicide bombing in Afghanistan three years ago.

Sgt. Andrew Mahoney, a U.S. Army Europe-based Soldier, was with Groberg on the same mission and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds sustained, and a Silver Star for putting his life on the line that day for his comrades.

Today, Mahoney is an instructor at the 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command's Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Grafenwoehr, Germany, where he belongs, he says, for the right reasons.

"I didn't come (to the NCO Academy) because I got wounded in combat," Mahoney said. "I came here because I wanted to shape junior leaders with my experiences as a whole."

The Purple Heart is issued to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy.

The Silver Star is the third-highest military decoration for valor that can be awarded to any person serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
