FORT LEE, Va. (Oct. 8, 2015) -- The Annual Kenner Army Health Clinic 5K Volksmarch and health fair will take place Oct. 17, 9 a.m. - noon. The facility's A Avenue parking lot will be the start and finish point. Free registration begins at 8 a.m.

The goal of the event is to educate the community on the resources available at Kenner and how individuals can achieve overall health, wellness and resilience.

"The Volksmarch is open to everyone in the Fort Lee community, and is a great opportunity for families to get out, exercise and have fun," said Lt. Col. Brett H. Venable, Kenner Army Health Clinic commander. "Following the 5K hike, attendees can indulge in traditional German food, visit the health fair and learn about healthy living."

Representatives from the Active Duty Clinic, Behavioral Health, Preventive Medicine, Disease Management and others will participate in the health fair. Association of the U.S. Army, DENTAC, and KAHC's network partners also will be showcasing services they offer the Fort Lee community.

Capt. Lori Gatrell, event coordinator, has led the Kenner team in planning this community opportunity. "There is just an array of subjects that will be presented in an effort to teach the community healthy living is not just about one aspect. A healthy life is all the way around: sleep, nutrition and physical activities are different things you can do to ensure that," said Gatrell.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the Army Surgeon General's System for Health and Performance Triad initiative that emphasizes the importance of physical activity, nutrition and sleep as a holistic approach.

The volksmarch and health fair began three years ago to educate the community on various ways to make informed choices that reduce health risks and contribute to chronic disease.

Mark calendars and make plans today to join Kenner for a morning of fun! Take advantage of the crisp air and the gorgeous canopy of fall foliage while taking a walk toward a healthier community.
