TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. -- A six-member fielding team from Tobyhanna Army Depot travelled to the Republic of Korea to replace components on a number of AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-37 radars.
Depot personnel installed and tested new state-of-the-art Receiver Exciters (REX) after removing legacy components. The enhanced REX improves system performance, maintainability and reliability, and extends service life.
Firefinder radars track the path of incoming shells, rockets, and mortars, and calculate the point from where they were fired.
"We also upgraded the modular azimuth positioning system, which is part of the radars global positioning system," said Todd Telipski, electronics mechanic leader, C4ISR Directorate. Telipski explained that the upgrade reduces the number of line replaceable units in the components from 45 to less than 10.
Technicians installed upgraded software and a maintenance platform giving Soldiers easier access to both sides of the radar. Firefinder technicians will be logging thousands of miles to stateside and overseas locations this summer as they tackle a "pretty aggressive" schedule, according to Joseph McCafferty, section chief.
This was Electronics Worker Joseph Brungard's first trip to Korea and he said the support they received from the unit was impressive. "We couldn't have asked for better support. The unit was well equipped and the personnel very accommodating."
