CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Nov. 18, 2014)-- "A warrior's tradition: Contributing to our Nation's Freedom" was this year's theme for the National American Indian Heritage Month observance hosted by the United States Army Japan and I Corps (Forward).
The observance was held Nov. 13 at the Camp Zama Community Activity Center to honor and recognize significant contributions of the National American Indians in the military.
Spc. Ezekiah Jackson, assigned to USARJ, acted as 1Lt. Ernest Childers, one of the four American Indian Soldiers highlighted during the observance.
Childers, assigned to the 45th infantry Division in Oliveto, Italy during World War II, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his brave actions, explained Jackson in his speech.
"He had a never quit attitude" said Jackson, "That gave his men a lot of courage to continue on even when the odds were against them."
The other American Indian Soldiers represented during the observance were Sgt. Tobias W. Frazier, Sr., Cpl. Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., and Spc. Lori Piestewa.
An award presentation was held at the end of the event, followed by closing remarks.
