YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- U.S. Army Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company and members of Eunpyeong-Gu National Unification Advisory Council made combined efforts to deliver coal briquettes to the Susaek-dong area to help them survive this winter, 28 Oct.

The purpose of this event was basically to "share the warmth" with low-income families in Susaek-dong area by distributing coal briquettes to the families. In the 1960s, most of the households in South Korea used coal briquettes to heat up their house in winter.

They now use boiler system but the houses that are not yet redeveloped still depend on the briquettes to survive the cold. 3,000 briquettes in total were distributed to the families for this winter.

After 3 hours of carrying, they had short opening ceremony in a church in the presence of Jeon, Woo-Dae, Chairman of Eunpyeong-Gu National Unification Advisory Council and the HHC Commander Cpt. Kim.

"We sincerely convey our deepest appreciation to the soldiers of USAG for your valuable time and effort in assisting the citizens of Seoul Eunpyeong-Gu District," said Jeon.

"We are sure what you have shown to Eunpyeong residents, your noble spirit of philanthropy, will be an opportunity to further enhance the friendship between South Korea and the United States."

At the ceremony, Cpt. Kim was presented Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan.

After the presentation, the chairman gave out necessaries, such as rice, ramen, blankets, donated by Eunpyeong-Gu Council and Korean-Foreigners Friendship Cultural Society to the North Korean defectors and Susaek-dong residents.

Pfc. Kwon from HHC, USAG-Y shares his thoughts.

"It sure was a unique experience worth remembering because it was nice to know that there still are people who live in a lesser condition than ours. If there are people who need assistance out there, then it is our job to help them stand on their feet."
