PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Safety expert/motivational speaker/stand-up comedian Steve Verret was the unofficial master of ceremonies at the annual Presidio of Monterey SHARP and SAPR Night at the Presidio's Post Theater Aug. 15.

Verret kicked off the event and used audience interaction and humor to keep guests engaged and involved throughout the evening.

More than 200 service members and civilians turned out for popular event, which included picnicking on the theater's outdoor terrace, overlooking the Monterey Bay at sunset, information tables highlighting local associations and programs, guest speakers, skits and improv, an awards ceremony and video clips.

The event's keynote speaker was John Van Epp, , author and lecturer specializing in how to create and cultivate healthy personal relationships. Van Epp's presentation "Staying Sharp: How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk(ette)" used a unique blend of humor and insight to illustrate the dangers of abusive relationships.

Verret's and Van Epp's appearances on the Presidio were designed to help educate service members and civilian employees on SHARP and SAPR policies and the many resources available to them in the community.

During their presentations, the two presenters also addressed issues confronting service member resiliency and depression, how to seek help and how service members can help each other.

Outside the theater various agencies and service member associations provided refreshments and gave away service member support materials.

The evening was sponsored by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response programs, Presidio Army Community Service, the Presidio's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, the Army and Air Force Chaplains Office, Presidio FMWR and Presidio Army Substance Abuse Program.
