CAMP WALKER, South Korea -- "Reading is something you should do for a lifetime," said Brig. Gen. Stephen E. Farmen, Commanding General of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, as the Summer Book Reading program, sponsored by U.S. Army Garrison Daegu Library, finished with its closing ceremony at Camp Walker's Hilltop club, Aug 2.
The Summer Book Reading program, which started in 2009 by USAG-D Libraries (Camp Walker and Camp Carroll), began to promote children to read books during summer vacation. As the program progressed, more and more attendees enrolled the program. This year, 325 people have participated, which is four times larger since its starts year ago. The total hours of reading during this year summer vacation accounted for is 3,715 hours.
Farmen attended the closing ceremony to give awards for children and people who read the highest number of books. The Summer Book Reading program started June 22 more than 300 people enrolled.
"I'm very thankful to be invited to participate in today's event. All the great children and people involved in this program make our community so special," said Farmen.
Grace Trevino, mother of 3-year-old Max Trevino was a super reader among toddlers. Trevino said, "This program encouraged us to read more books instead of playing games, watching TV or movies. We read over 300 books during the summer program." She said she was pleased that Max could enjoy reading books through this program.
After award ceremony, a raffle was held with prizes like a new bike, Nikon camera, Kindle fire and gift cards and attendee placed their names in a raffle basket based on how many books they read.
Jamie. J .Byun, USAG Daegu Librarian, said, "It is proven that students who continuously read books during summer vacation tend to adapt to the new school year easily and record good scores." She added, "Reading makes you better person and better Soldier", said Byun, by expecting that more Soldier will participation in next summer reading book program.
USAG Daegu Libraries have over 52,000 materials, including books, magazines, CD and DVDs, and over 120 programs are conducted a year.
