High schools: What parents should know

FORT BENNING, Ga., (July 2, 2014) -- Parents of high schoolers at Fort Benning have many options in the Chattahoochee Valley when it comes to enrolling their children in school. To help make the process easier, the Bayonet and Saber has featured information on each of the public high schools in the area. Our staff hopes these overviews have been informative and useful.

Northside High School

2002 American Way, Columbus

•Has 1,500 students enrolled in grades 9-12

•Northside is home to the Engineering and Engineering Design magnet academy. Students must apply to enter and must participate in community service. They have many opportunities to take part in competitions and activities related to engineering.

•Northside has made annual yearly progress goals every year it has been open and has received distinguished school status for five years.

•Athletics offered include: Baseball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, track, volleyball and wrestling.

•92 percent of NHS students met or exceeded standards in English in the 2011-2012 school year.

Smith Station High School

Smith Station, Alabama

•Has 1,800 students enrolled in grades 9-12

•Mascot is the panther.

•83 percent of SSHS students met or exceeded standards in reading on the Alabama High School graduation exam in the 2011-2012 school year. 92 percent met or exceeded standards in math.

•Athletics offered include: Basketball, cheerleading, football, softball, golf, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, tennis, track and cross-country.

•92 percent of NHS students met or exceeded standards in English in the 2011-2012 school year.
