As the community prepares for the 2014 Independence Day celebration along the National Mall, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBM-HH) announces changes to some popular fireworks viewing areas in Arlington County, Va.

In accordance with the Millennium Project memorandums of agreement signed between the Department of Defense and Arlington County, land was recently transferred to the U.S. Army for use by Arlington National Cemetery. The land includes the site of the former Navy Annex on Southgate Road and the area of land bordered by Columbia Pike to the north and Washington Blvd. and Interstate 395 to the south and intersected by S. Joyce Street. See attached map. In the interest of public safety, access to this land is now restricted, and members of the public are advised that this area is no longer available for viewing the fireworks display shot from the National Mall on July 4.

JBM-HH law enforcement personnel will be enforcing the restricted areas and keeping the roadways around the designated land clear for emergency services.

Fireworks viewing is still available from the Air Force Memorial as well as the slope-side of the memorial. Parking for the Air Force Memorial site is available along the northern side of Southgate Road. There is also a designated event parking lot for the Air Force Memorial accessed off of Southgate Road, but this lot is reserved for invited Air Force Memorial guests.

Department of Defense ID card holders and Arlington County residents may view the National Mall fireworks from JBM-HH's Whipple Field, located on the Fort Myer portion of the base, and from the field between D and E Streets at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. Guests may begin arriving after 5 p.m. at both locations. Wright Gate, on the Fort Myer side of the base located at North Meade Street and Marshall Drive, will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning at 3 p.m. Pedestrian traffic may access the base through this gate until 11 p.m.

Arlington County will announce road closures around the Fort Myer and Henderson Hall portions of JBM-HH. This information will be posted to the JBM-HH Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jbmhh when the road closure announcements become available. Members of the public may also check http://police.arlingtonva.us/.

Approved visitor items at JBM-HH include: coolers, strollers, chairs, blankets, cell phones and cameras (in accordance with JBM-HH photo policy). All items are subject to search. Prohibited items are: weapons, grills, glass containers, fireworks (to include sparklers), alcohol, pets, and running games such as football, baseball and Frisbee. Additionally, fishing is not allowed at Fort McNair.

Water and other non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase (cash only) at Whipple Field courtesy of the JBM-HH Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers program.
