Fort Belvoir, Va. (May 22, 2014) - Military community members got to skip long lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles last weekend.

In fact, they didn't even need to leave Fort Belvoir to get a new driver's license, take a road test or get new license plates, since the DMV 2 Go Mobile Office visited the post Friday and Saturday.

"I think it's fantastic," said Don Smith, military spouse, who visited the DMV 2 Go Friday to pick up a title and registration form for a new motorcycle.

"I had something I needed and it was here. I didn't go out of my way. It was more than convenient," he said.

The mobile office parked by the Fort Belvoir Exchange and provided a variety of services to community members.

"It's a full-service DMV. We do driver's licenses, vehicle transactions, different road tests, hunting and fishing licenses, veteran ID cards," said Mahnoor Zahid, DMV mobile office manager for Northern Virginia. "It's kind of a one-stop shop."

The DMV 2 Go also offered two new services: Virginia birth certificates and EZ-Passes (regular and flex).

"This is something very exciting that we've started recently," Zahid said. "If they've lost their birth certificate … they can walk in, we can issue the birth certificate and they can have it on them."

The mobile DMV can also provide driving tests, including road tests, both for a regular driver's license and a commercial driver's license.

Mobile DMVs visit military bases in Virginia every quarter as part of a Virginia DMV initiative to better serve active-duty and retired servicemembers and their Families, she added.

"It's very convenient for the military," she said. "They can come in anytime between the hours that we're here and we can process all kinds of transactions. There are no lines, no waits."

Civilians are also welcome.

On Fort Belvoir, the DMV 2 Go visits the second Friday and Saturday of every quarter. The next visit will be Aug. 15-16 at the Exchange parking lot.
