Interactive wellness event on tap for Fort Lee community

FORT LEE, Va. (March 27, 2014) -- Kenner Army Health Clinic is gearing up to host a community event aimed at providing families a day of fun while impacting health and fitness

The event is set for April 16, 1-4 p.m.

If you and your family are looking for something to do this year during Spring Break, look no further. KAHC welcomes the community for an interactive, fun-filled event that is educational and will enable participants to learn more about the Army Surgeon General's Performance Triad. The triad is an important part of helping all families become healthier by improving physical activity, sleep and nutrition.

At the event, walkers -- both human and canine -- the opportunity to participate in either a 1K or 3K stroll to emphasize the importance of physical activity as one of the three components of the Performance Triad. This will raise awareness of the importance of physical activity, nutrition and sleep as a holistic approach to care.

Varied information provided at the event will help participants to make choices to reduce health risks, like as lack of exercise, obesity and too little sleep, all of which contributes to chronic disease.

Representatives the Active Duty clinic, Family Medicine Clinic, the Department of Behavioral Health, Preventive Medicine and Disease Management are among the many health care entities that will be represented at the health fair.

In addition, the Fort Lee Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation will showcase fitness classes and representatives from the Bowling Center and Cardinal Golf course will be will provide information.

Some of the activities planned include a mini driving range, single lane bowling, Zumba, yoga, strength training demonstrations and much more. Register and grab an activity card to get moving.

"At this time of year, the whole world seems to come to life." said Col. Thomas S. Bundt, KAHC commander. "Daffodils and tulips are blooming, along with the flowering trees, and spring break makes April the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors as a family, It is the best time of the year for a family event."

Bundt, who is an outdoor enthusiast and avid runner, stated that he encourages family-oriented events aimed at healthy lifestyles as another venue to motivate the community.

"I'd like every community member to take advantage of the weather, a gorgeous canopy of spring foliage, and life enhancing information and join Kenner as we strive toward building a healthier community," he said.

The event has been in the planning stage for weeks and staff members said they are excied to show KAHC beneficiaries how to lie healthier.

Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, the Army surgeon general and commanding general of U.S. Army Medical Command, launched a pilot program for the Performance Triad in February as a strategy to educate and enable military health care beneficiaries to be more proactive in developing healthy behaviors for life.

Military treatment facilities, like Kenner, launched the triad program that invests in improving the readiness and resilience of the Army family.

KAHC and the triad encourages Army family members to incorporate health-promoting behaviors and decisions into their everyday lives or "life space."

Registration for all participants begins at 1 p.m. Children ages 13 or younger will receive a certificate of achievement. Leashed pets, which are current on vaccinations, are welcome to join the fun.
