U.S. Army stands up joint program office at Selfridge

<i>Plans in place to bring over 200 jobs to Selfridge Air National Guard Base</i>
HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - The U.S. Army, today, officially announced the relocation of Army's Project Manager for Joint Combat Support Systems, which falls under the leadership of the Program Executive Office for Combat Support & Combat Service Support, to Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The transition will bring approximately 200 jobs into the joint military community.
Col. John Myers, Project Manger for JCSS, said that Selfridge is a logical place for PM JCSS.
"We manage a number of programs that support the Joint Services, and Selfridge has always been a Joint Service installation," continued Myers. "Our office includes Army and Marine Corps officers and civilians, and we also expect to have several military personnel from other countries join us as we develop the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle."
"We are pleased that the Joint Combat Support Systems has elected to further invest itself here," said Brig. Gen. Michael Peplinski, 127th Wing commander, Selfridge base commander. "As diverse military missions continue to relocate to Selfridge, we are able to add to the economic engine of defense and homeland security industries here in southeast Michigan. This announcement is good for Michigan's economy, good for our communities, and good for Selfridge as well."
The mission of PM JCSS focuses on persistent combat in order to provide capabilities and tactical platforms necessary for expeditionary forces, while supporting the Joint Warfighter across the spectrum of operational conflict.
"We are developing new systems to support the Joint Warfighters' demands on tomorrow's battlefields," said Myers.
"As a partner of the TACOM Life Cycle Management Command, Project Manager for Joint Combat Support Systems plays an important role in providing our Joint Warfighters with what it takes to meet their needs," said Maj. Gen. Scott West, TACOM Life Cycle Management Command Commanding General. "Their move to Selfridge will help ensure that our support to the Joint Warfighters remains exceptional."
After officially becoming a project management office in October 2007, PM JCSS quickly became the focal point for Joint Service platforms and technical solutions.
Currently, PM JCSS is comprised of four Army-led program teams, two of which are located at Selfridge:
* Product Manager Joint Light Tactical Vehicles: is a joint U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Special Operations Command program, with the U.S. Army designated as the lead service. Capability gaps within the existing tactical vehicle fleet are the result of an imbalance in protection, payload and performance. The goal of the JLTV program is to provide an expeditionary family of vehicles capable of performing multiple missions while being capable of providing protected, sustained, and networked mobility for personnel and payloads across the full Range of Military Operations. The JLTV Family of Vehicles will add to the joint services' mix of tactical vehicles by providing a balanced vehicle solution - performance, payload and protection - with increased transportability and expeditionary mobility. PM JLTV is headquartered at Selfridge and has an office in Quantico, Va.
* PM Sets, Kits, Outfits and Tools: is responsible for research, development, acquisition, fielding, and logistics support of the modernized and legacy hand carry, containerized, and mobile tool sets, kits, and outfits, diving equipment, and shop support equipment. Additionally, PM SKOT provides support to other Department of Defense, Federal, State, and foreign governments. They are currently fielding critical systems to improve the maintenance of Army platforms such as the Forward Repair System, the Shop Equipment Contact Maintenance vehicle, and the Standard Automotive Tool Set. PM SKOT is currently located at Rock Island Arsenal in Moline, Ill.
* Product Director Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment: develops, acquires, deploys, and supports standardized, general-purpose, test, measurement, diagnostic and calibration equipment that supports all levels of maintenance for multiple weapon systems. PM TMDE is currently developing the Next Generation Automatic Test Set, which will modernize the Army's test capability to support over a dozen combat platforms. They are also modernizing the Army's primary at-platform tester through the development of a rugged and lightweight Maintenance Support Device. PD TMDE is located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala.
* Horizontal Technology Insertion Special Project Office: manages the Army's Expedited Modernization Initiative Procedure, which is a market research process that seeks to improve the current and future fleet of Combat, Combat Support & Combat Service Support Systems by identifying advanced technologies at the component level. Quarterly EMIP component technology demonstrations provide an open invitation to all industry, small and large, to actively/physically demonstrate new technologies as potential technology improvement candidates. HTI is located at Selfridge.
