Fort Benning Tax Center set to open doors Jan. 30

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Dec. 18, 2013) -- Soldiers, retirees and Family members can take advantage of free e-Filing for federal and state returns next month at the Fort Benning Tax Center.

The grand opening for the tax center will be Jan. 30. Remarks and a ribbon cutting will begin at 1 p.m. and the center will be open for business at 2 p.m.

Capt. John McGuire, officer in charge for the center, said the center saved clients more than $760,000 in tax preparation fees last season.

The total amount of refunds issued by state and federal agencies for those returns was more than $7.2 million.

The center prepared more than 4,000 combined federal and state income tax returns last year. McGuire said active-duty Soldiers, civilians and volunteers who work in the Tax Center have undergone extensive training and are properly certified by the IRS.

Tax preparers are certified through the IRS with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

"I think the biggest benefit is it's absolutely free for federal and state returns," McGuire said.

"Another benefit to filing with us instead of doing it yourself or going to another tax preparer is that we are all certified by the IRS and we specifically concentrate on military tax matters applicable to Soldiers, retirees and their Families."

A military or dependent ID and adequate proof of a Social Security number that must come directly from the Social Security Administration for each taxpayer, spouse, and dependent is required.

Adequate proof includes an actual or copy of a Social Security Card, a memorandum from the Social Security Administration and Social Security statements for retirees.

"We strongly encourage bringing in the prior year's return, no matter where you filed," McGuire said.

"It is helpful for tax preparation and you will have a more accurate return."

The center's hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Saturday starting Feb. 8. The center will stop taking new clients 30 minutes prior to closing.
